Information technology has a profound effect on individuals, organizations,
and society. Whereas most of its impact is positive, there might be some n
egative side-effects. This paper argues that to a certain extent, society h
as developed in a way that resembles autism, which is concerned with the ma
nner people react and communicate. In particular, excessive use of IT and c
omputers might cause Western societies to acquire characteristics of autism
. Signs of this can be found in a variety of domains, such as telecommuting
or Internet addiction. Cultural considerations must be put in place if we
wish to keep a balance between private and public life. Implications for in
dividuals, organizations and society are discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Scien
