Abstract
Fixed nucleotide differences were found in the partial 16S rRNA mitochondri al gene sequences between two regional populations of Maurolicus (identifie d as M. muelleri and M. walvisensis), indicating clear genealogical separat ion of the two taxa. Accordingly, the two taxa can be considered as recentl y diverged species, supporting the recent proposition of a polytypic genus Maurolicus.
