The addition of glutardialdehyde, 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde or aminocaproic
acid enables a modification of the properties of the layers resulting from
the sol-gel process of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). Kinetics of various hydro
lysis and condensation reaction steps were analyzed by Si-29 and C-13 Nucle
ar magnetic resonance spectroscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studie
s give evidence that the additive molecules are also located on the surface
. The layer morphology was characterized by atomic force microscopy. (C) 20
