'Upenamide (1) represents a new class of macrocyclic marine alkaloid posses sing both spiro-oxaquinolizidinone and hemiaminal ring systems. It was isol ated from the Indonesian sponge Echinochalina sp. The gross structure of I was:elucidated by spectroscopic methods and accurate mass measurements. A s uggestion is made as to its biogenetic origin.
