The hydrothermal synthesis and single crystal XRD characterization have bee
n performed for two manganese phosphonocarboxylates, Mn-3(O3PCH2COO)(2) 1 a
nd Mn-3(O3PCH2CH2COO)(2) 2. Compound 2 forms a pillared structure related t
o that of the analogous zinc compound and 1 exhibits a three-dimensional ne
twork; MnO5 and MnO6 polyhedra are observed and all oxygens take part in co
ordination of the Mn2+ ions. Magnetization measurements of 1 and 2 indicate
weak ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic ordering, respectively, at low te
mperatures. Thermogravimetric analyses show the structure to be stable up t
o 430 and 400 degreesC for 1 and 2, respectively.
