Superresolution permits fine details to be observed that cannot be resolved
by standard optical instruments. me demonstrate that superresolution is no
thing more than an adaptation of degrees of freedom converted from the spat
ial domain to some other domains and vice verse. The tool used for the requ
ired conversion and adaptation is the Wigner chart. In addition, we shaw th
at the Wigner chart may he naturally applied for analyzing and understandin
g complex optical setups used for obtaining superresolution. (C) 2000 Optic
