Prevalence of hypertension and contemporary state of antihypertensive therapy in Nizhegorodskaya region (register results, 1998)

According to the study of 923 families prevalence of hypertension in Nizheg orodskaya region was 37% (soft criteria, blood pressure >140/90 mm Hg) or 1 8% (hard criteria, blood pressure >160/95 mm Hg). Hypertension was classifi ed as I, II and III grade in 50,3, 31,2 and 18,5% of hypertensives, respect ively. Prevalence of hypertension (hard criteria) was highest in Nizhny Nov gorod (22,3%). Majority of men (82,9%) and women (90,9%) were informed abou t their hypertension. Efficacy of therapy did not exceed 8,6%. Proportion. of controlled hypertension (according to WHO criteria) was 1,5% overall and 0,5% among men aged 40-60 years.
