As our knowledge of non-Hodgkin lymphoma rapidly expands, we must either re
vise our current classifications or develop new ones. Morphology provides t
he most important basis for classifying lymphomas, but precise classificati
on of some lymphomas requires that we include immunophenotype and genotype
as well. In this review, we briefly analyze previous classifications and de
scribe how new approaches-the Revised European-American Classification of l
ymphoid Neoplasms and World Health Organization Classification-help us to u
nderstand specific lymphoma entities.
