Abstract
Two new cationic mono(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) organohafnium compl exes with eta(3)-2-methallyl ligands, [(C5Me5)Hf(eta(3)-2-C4H7)Me][MeB (C6F5)(3)] (5) and [(C5Me5)Hf(eta(3)-2-C4H7)(2)][B(C6F5)(4)] (6), have been prepared. The former readily polymerises ethene, but is not acti ve towards propene. The latter, with the weakly coordinating [B(C6F5)( 4)] anion, oligomerises propene to atactic oligomers. In contrast with metallocene systems, the oligomerisation of a-olefins like propene is apparently readily initiated on the 2-methallyl groups in this comple x.
