Hj. Schonfeldt et M. Stephan, On the influence of wind climate on coast dynamics of the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the region between the Warnow mouth and Hiddensee, METEOROL Z, 9(5), 2000, pp. 299-308
The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of altered distributi
ons of wind direction on coast dynamics, wherein, however, the mean wind is
kept the same. The deterministic model KEM was developed to be able to rel
ate sediment quantities transported over an equilibrium profile by interact
ion of waves, longshore currents, and edge waves to the meteorological situ
ations of the past hundred years. The sediment transport capacities were ca
lculated over an averaged equilibrium profile for the region between the Wa
rnow mouth and Dornbusch (island of Hiddensee, German Baltic coast). Result
s of the KEM model run for climatological different time series of wind fro
m 1885 to 1939 and from 1940 to 1984 were compared to sediment balances obt
ained from surveys between the years 1885 and 1937 and from 1937 to 1983, r
espectively. Particularly in the Weststrand region (Fischland) model result
s match the actual changes of coast line. KEM represents a modelling tool w
hich can be used to predict sediment transport for given wind scenarios in
an area of interest.
