Abstract
The production rates of C-37 alkenones in the euphotic zone of Sagami Bay, Japan Evert determined by the C-13-labeling technique in conjunction with g as chromatography-mass spectrometry. The maximum in the alkenone production rate (C-37:2 plus C-37:3 alkenones) was observed at 5 m depth and the spec ific production rate, calculated from the rate of production relative to st anding stock in suspended particles, was 0.64 day(-1) at this depth. Temper ature, based on the newly-produced alkenone unsaturation index (U-37(k)), w as close to in situ temperatures at the depth where alkenones production wa s active. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd.
