Abstract
The etymological variants underlying OE dizle and its dialect equivalents c an be retraced as follows: Whereas Mercian dezol derives from WGerm. *dauyu l-, Northumbrian dezle originates from WGerm. *dauyil-. In West Saxon prope r the competition between di(e)zol, di(e)zle < *dauyil- and deozol < *deuyu l- resolves in favour of the former. Kent and the South East know deazol < *dauyul- and deozol < *deuyul- (> Kent. diozol > ME Kent. dizel). As ME doe s not possess variants with e we must assume that the substitution of Angli an dezel by dizel took place already during the OE period.
