Abstract
Daudet pleaded with the Alsatians to maintain their French identity despite their annexation to Prussia as a result of the Franco-Prussian War. The st udy examines the figure of the schoolmaster, who stands for French national ism, and the reactions to the story both when it appeared in 1872 and today .
