Abstract
Sallenave's novel focuses on the fall of communism in Europe in the 1990s a nd its impact on ordinary people, represented by the main characters: Zoria in Russia, Isabelle and Anna in France. Drawing from Hannah Arendt and Pie rre Nora, this study discusses "the acceleration of history" and the distin ction made by the novelist between modernity and progress, history and memo ry, historical time and existential time.
