Abstract
We report the emergence in Kenya during 1997-1999 of typhoid fever due to S almonella enterica serovar Typhi resistant to ampicillin, tetracycline, ch[ oramphenicol, streptomycin, and cotrimoxazole. Genotyping by pulsed-field g el electrophoresis of Xbal-digested chromosomal DNA yielded a single cluste r. The multidrug-resistant S. Typhi were related to earlier drug-susceptibl e isolates but were unrelated to multidrug-resistant isolates from Asia.
