Abstract
For the theoretical description of radiation Powerline Communication signal s out of the mains network a novel ray optical model is presented. The main s network is divided into discrete Hertzian dipoles injected with:BI the co rresponding current distribution. The fields at the observation point are d etermined using a ray tracing algorithm combined with ray density normalisa tion. The commonly used far field approximation is not valid in this case b ecause the mains network is a distributed antenna structure. Instead, the e xact near field equations must be used. The implemented simulation model yi elds very accurate results even in the near field and it can compute realis tic scenarios that would be too complex for standard field theoretical meth ods, such as the method of moments.
