Abstract
Academic freedom is a central value of higher education. It affects the aca demic profession in all aspects of academic work. Yet, academic freedom is rarely discussed in the context of the changes taking place in higher educa tion in the current period. The concept is defined in a historical and comp arative framework, and the challenges facing academic freedom around the wo rld are discussed.
