Abstract
A method for theoretically calculating the maximum transport through a stra it, using the actual topography, is presented. The study is conducted withi n the framework of rotating hydraulics. The results are used for estimating the amount of North Atlantic Deep Water flowing through the Jungfern Passa ge into the Caribbean Sea. These appraisals are compared with previous theo retical estimates, for which a rectangular bottom profile has been used, an d with transport calculations based on observations.
