This provides an overview of the major physical, hydrographic, and chemical
conditions in the New York Bight, as well as details of the principal shal
low waters, embayments, and coastal habitats adjacent to the Bight, based o
n historical and recent data. Given these data, living resources at risk an
d the factors affecting them are reviewed. The principal conclusions are th
at, although the Bight and ancillary waters were once heavily contaminated,
the ending of ocean disposal, upgrading of sewage treatment, and general o
verall improvement in the handling of wastes have resulted in significant i
