We report on central pontine myelinolysis (CMP) in a 38-year old femal
e who was dependent on alcohol and had preceeding gastrointestinal sym
ptoms. Basing especially on the missing hyponatriaemia during the acut
e beginning of the illness, its character is explained by chronic hypo
natriaemia and osmotic stress. The course with typical symptoms, repea
ted pneumonias and fracture of the hand correlated with variability in
the early acoustic evoked potentials.
