An outbreak of abortion, agalactia and weak foals was observed in a th
orougbred breeding farm in south central Chile. Of 96 pregnant mares,
grazing on tall fescue, 11 aborted and 6 presented agalactia. A high p
ercentage of weak foals was also observed. Acremonium coenophialum was
isolated from tall fescue, suggesting that the reproductive problem o
bserved was due to the presence of the endophyte.
