Inflammatory cytokines in nonpathological states

During infection, inflammatory cytokines induce regulated changes in the ho st's infernal milieu that create a hostile environment to an invading patho gen. Recent evidence indicates that these cytokines are constitutively prod uced, their production is increased by environmental stressors other than m icrobes, and they modulate "normal" physiological processes.
