Superconducting HgBa2CaCu2Oy (Hg-1212) films have been fabricated on the (1
00) Y-ZrO2 substrates with YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) buffer layers by a two-step pro
cess. By using of the YBCO buffer layer reproducible superconducting proper
ties, zero resistance temperatures of T-c = 115-124K and critical current d
ensity of J(c) = 0.1 - 0.3 MA/cm(2) at 100K in zero magnetic field, were ob
tained. X-ray diffraction theta -2 theta patterns and phi scans indicated t
hat the films grow epitaxially on the YBCO surfaces with c-axis perpendicul
ar to the substrates. The results demonstrated that YBCO is a good buffer f
or growing the Hg-cuprate films. This novel method gives a new way to grow
the Hg-cuprate films on various substrates, even on flexible metallic tapes
