We have calculated zone-boundary phonons in La2-xBaxCuO4 for x = 0 up to x
= 0.4. In case of x = 0.1 a strongly anharmonic potential for the oxygen Cu
-O bond-stretching mode in the CuO2 plane at the N point was found. We ther
efore predict a softening similar to the experimental findings recently obs
erved in Sr-doped La2CuO4.
