The collision induced loss of methanol from deprotonated 4-methoxybut-
1-yne occurs by at least two mechanisms, viz. (a) a stepwise cyclizati
on-deprotonation-ring opening process involving the acetylenic pi elec
trons, and (b) a 1,2-elimination process which may either be (i) a pro
cess in which cyclisation involving the pi electrons and loss of metha
nol are synchronous, or (ii) a 'remote' concerted process which does n
ot involve the acetylenic centre.
