Antibiotic susceptibilities were determined for 122 Neisseria gonorrheae is
olates obtained from 400 sex workers in Jakarta, Indonesia, and susceptibil
ities to ciprofloxacin, cefuroxime, cefoxitin, cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, chl
oramphenicol, and spectinomycin were found. All isolates were resistant to
tetracycline. A number of the isolates demonstrated decreased susceptibilit
ies to erythromycin (MIC greater than or equal to 1.0 mug/ml), thiamphenico
l (MIC greater than or equal to 1.0 mug/ml), kanamycin (MIC greater than or
equal to 16.0 mug/ml), penicillin (MIC greater than or equal to 2.0 mug/ml
), gentamicin (MIC greater than or equal to 16.0 mug/ml), and norfloxacin (
MIC = 0.5 mug/ml). These data showed that certain antibiotics previously us
ed in the treatment of gonorrhea are no longer effective.
