Conductivity of polyaniline dispersions stabilized in aqueous medium with p
oly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) is related to the prediction for the model system c
omposed of conducting spheres dispersed in a continuous medium. The behavio
ur of as-prepared dispersion, dispersions dialysed against dilute hydrochlo
ric acid and water, and dispersions based on dry particles redispersed in w
ater is reported, An increase in conductivity of the reaction mixture durin
g the polymerization of aniline is discussed in connection with simultaneou
s changes in acidity and temperature. The use of conductometry in monitorin
g the aniline polymerization is illustrated on reactions carried out at var
ious temperatures. The course of dispersion and precipitation polymerizatio
ns, as reflected by conductivity measurements, is compared. (C) 2000 Elsevi
