Deuterium plasma will be used during the early phase of the International T
hermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) operation. For a typical reduced c
ost ITER the D-D-neutron yield similar to3.5 x 10(18) n s(-1) will be accom
panied by a considerable tritium production and a D-T (14.1-MeV)-neutron yi
eld of similar to0.7 - 3.5 x 10(18) n s(-1). This paper describes the nucle
ar performance for the two-component neutron source experienced in the prop
osed advanced H-mode D-D regimes. The calculated nuclear energy release and
residual activity estimates can be important from the radiation safety, ma
intenance and staged ITER construction standpoints. (C) 2000 Elsevier Scien
