This study concerns the assessment of the long-term hazards associated both
with fission and future fusion reactors, namely:
intrusion in a fusion waste disposal site. This analysis was performed in t
he frame of the SEAFP-2 studies of the European Fusion Technology Programme
.
intrusion in a fusion waste disposal site. In this case, data are taken fro
m typical European waste disposal sites.
long-term migration of radioactive nuclides due to natural waste package de
gradation, for both fission and fusion reactor cases.
In all relevant cases, evaluation of associated risks is carried out. A com
parison of the obtained results permits to state that:
intrusion is by far the most relevant source of public risk for radioactive
waste disposal;
fusion shows lower values of radiological hazard compared to that of fissio
n;
the evaluated risks are well below the acceptable risk limits and in good a
greement with the results of other studies. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.
