The safety in long pulse operation is one of the main issues to guarantee t
he integrity of all materials. This is particularly true for the new Tore S
upra's toroidal pump limiter (TPL) built in the frame of CIEL project, and
Tore Supra's antennas, designed to operate in quasi-CW (up to 1000 s). A sy
stem made of infrared endoscopes equipped with infrared cameras will be dev
oted to such a task. Besides the safety task, it also allows the study of t
he physics of the power deposition on the TPL and on the antennas, as well
as feedback control. This paper gives an overview of the design of the Infr
ared Monitoring System, the main technological choices and the thermal and
mechanical calculations are presented. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All r
