In this article we propose a medium access control protocol for time-divisi
on duplex wideband code-division multiple access multimedia wireless commun
ications. The MAC protocol exploits both time-division and code-division st
atistical multiplexing to efficiently accommodate real-time voice and video
traffic and non-real-time bursty data traffic. An optimal packet schedulin
g algorithm is proposed to allocate system resources to each user for QoS p
rovisioning and high resource utilization. For a practical solution, we pro
pose suboptimal resource allocation and develop a heuristic bin-packing alg
orithm to solve the packet scheduling problem. Numerical results are presen
ted to demonstrate the performance of the suboptimal packet scheduling algo
rithm for mixed voice and data traffic.
