A strong effort of the Mn3+(d(4)) ions to remove their orbitally degenerate
d ground state is a motivating power to lower the symmetry of their surroun
dings. Besides this tendency the real effect depends also on a number of ad
ditional contributions, above all the fundamental structural matrix and com
positional influences. They are analyzed on examples of three structural ty
pes derived from the close packed arrangement of oxygen anions, namely spin
