The reactions between metal cluster anions and metal cluster cations contai
ning carbide ligands were explored. In one case, a salt formed which consis
ted of a cluster cation along with a cluster anion. By contrast, the intera
ction of [Rh2Cl2(CO)(4)] with [Fe-3(CO)(9)C2Fe(CO)(4)](2-) produced a new m
onocarbide metal cluster, [Fe3Rh3(CO)(5)C](-). (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.
