The extraction of HNO3, thorium and uranium were studied in the presence of
hydrofluoric acid. The extraction constants of both the acids are shown to
be close to one another which results in their mutual displacement from th
e organic phase. Contrary to uranium, the extraction of thorium is much red
uced as the concentration of hydrofluoric acid increases which may be expla
ined by a stronger complexation of Th by fluoride ion in the aqueous phase.
