A 4 pi Si-ball of about 5 cm diameter consisting of 12 pentagonal and
18 hexagonal silicon epitaxial n(+)-n-p(+) detectors of sensitive thic
kness of 100 mu m has been constructed. The energy resolution measured
with 3.5 and 5.85 MeV alpha-particles from Gd-148 and Am-241 sources,
respectively, varied from about 30-90 keV for individual detectors. T
he main aim of constructing this device was to provide selection of re
action channels for in-beam spectroscopy. The first ''in-beam'' result
s for this Si-ball were obtained using the reaction Ca-40 (200MeV) + N
i-58-->Cd-98() in an experiment performed at GSI.
