Conventional AC Plasma Display Panels (PDP) have a relatively low efficienc
y that is close to 1.5 lm/W, and only 1.5 similar to 20 % of the supplied e
nergy is consumed by the Xe excitation. If the AC sustaining period is repl
aced by an RF sustaining period, due to the oscillating, low electric field
, almost 60 % of the supplied energy is spent in Xe excitation. For a feasi
bility test, the UV generation and the green-phosphor excitation efficienci
es were measured. The efficiencies in RF plasmas were ten times higher than
those in AC plasmas. We invented a new hybrid-type PDP; the plasma was for
med due to AC writing pulses; then, it was sustained by RF sustaining pulse
s. Different gas compositions and different pressures were examined to achi
eve the high luminance and luminance efficiency. The luminance during the R
F-sustained period was 1500 similar to 2000 cd/m(2) in a Ne-Xe composition
at 200 similar to 400 Torr. The luminance efficiency was around 4 lm/W.
