Therapies derived from the living include proteins and cells. Proteins used
as therapies are mainly obtained from human plasma, usually after several
steps of purification. Some animal proteins are still used. These natural p
roteins are progressively replaced by proteins produced by recombinant tech
nology. Cells used as therapy include blood cells (red, white and platelets
), allogeneic and autologous hematopoietic stem cells, epidermal cells expa
nded in culture. Other cellular therapies are at different stages of experi
mentation: cells of the Immune system, Langerhans islets, hepatocytes, embr
yonic neuronal cells. More research on stem cells, their regulation and pla
sticity is a perequisite for new progresses, Procedures to evaluate these e
merging therapies are in continuous construction.
