A two-dimensional rectangular network has been fabricated for the first tim
e based on fullerene films using electron lithography. Such a system shows
the optical properties of a two-dimensional photonic crystal, which have be
en investigated by reflection and transmission methods. An enhancement of t
he nonlinear optical properties of the fullerene due to the formation of an
open network structure has been found. The pel iodic structure formed from
a fullerene film may be transferred easily into the substrate by plasma et
ching due to the resistive properties of solid state fullerenes. This metho
d allows one to fabricate semiconductor networks and field-induced quantum
dot structures.
