Li[Mo6Cl13] was obtained as single phase product from a solid state reactio
n of MoCl5, Mo powder, and LiCl at 800 degreesC. The structure as refined b
y single crystal X-ray diffraction, contains one-dimensional [(Mo6Cl8Cl4Cl2
/2a-a)-Cl-i-Cl-a](-) chains, formed by Cla-a bridges. Lithium ions are loca
ted in tunnels among the chain-direction, each of them being surrounded by
a distorted tetrahedral arrangement of outer chlorine ligands (Cl-a) belong
ing to four different clusters.
