S. Hanany et al., MAXIMA-1: A measurement of the cosmic microwave background anisotropy on angular scales of 10 '-5 degrees, ASTROPHYS J, 545(1), 2000, pp. L5-L9
We present a map and an angular power spectrum of the anisotropy of the cos
mic microwave background (CMB) from the first flight of the Millimeter-wave
Anisotropy Experiment Imaging Array (MAXIMA). MAXIMA is a balloon-borne ex
periment with an array of 16 bolometric photometers operated at 100 mK. MAX
IMA observed a 124 deg(2) region of the sky with 10' resolution at frequenc
ies of 150, 240, and 410 GHz. The data were calibrated using in-flight meas
urements of the CMB dipole anisotropy. A map of the CMB anisotropy was prod
uced from three 150 and one 240 GHz photometer without need for foreground
subtractions. Analysis of this CMB map yields a power spectrum for the CMB
anisotropy over the range 36 less than or equal to l less than or equal to
785. The spectrum shows a peak with an amplitude of 78 +/- 6 muK at l simil
ar or equal to 220 and an amplitude varying between similar to 40 and simil
ar to 50 muK for 400 less than or similar to l less than or similar to 785.
