Mr. Khan et al., Biodegradation of polythene under natural conditions and the possible roleof associated bacteria, BANGL J BOT, 29(2), 2000, pp. 105-108
Polythene samples randomly collected from garden refuses, open spaces and g
arbage dumps were inoculated in nutrient media (pH 7.0) for the enhancement
of the growth of microorganisms which could have possibly started a proces
s of colonization and adaptation. On prolonged incubation, one of the sampl
es showed perforations and distintegration of polythene ships. Spore former
bacilli were found to he dominating. The perforation and disintegration of
the polythene strips in the presence of bacteria indicated the biodegradat
ion of polythene.
