Rc. Balling et M. Hildebrandt, Evaluation of the linkage between Schumann Resonance peak frequency valuesand global and regional temperatures, CLIMATE RES, 16(1), 2000, pp. 31-36
Lightning-generated extremely low frequency electromagnetic energy (the Sch
umann Resonance) could be a sensitive indicator of tropical or global tempe
rature. In this investigation, we analyze the relationship between Schumann
Resonance peak frequency data and various daily and monthly temperature da
tasets. Our results show that daily and monthly lower-tropospheric temperat
ure estimates made from satellites and monthly thermometer-based temperatur
e measurements are significantly related to the Schumann Resonance peak fre
quency data collected in Rhode Island. Further analyses reveal that the tem
peratures from subtropical and tropical latitudes dominate the relationship
with daily and monthly Schumann Resonance peak frequency variations. Our r
esults further our understanding of the linkage between temperature pattern
s, latitudinal shifts in thunderstorms, and Schumann Resonance peak frequen
cies.
