Although Chicana/o ethnic identity has been studied extensively, the proces
s of ethnic identity development and the relationship between ethnic identi
ty and other aspects of social identity (such as racial identity) are still
nor well understood. This article presents a review of the research on Chi
cana/o ethnic identity,focusing on the early work on the National Chicano S
urvey as well as more recent research with Chicana/o children, adolescents,
and young adults. Important advances and shortcomings of this work are ide
ntified. The findings are discussed in the context of implications for rese
archers and counselors.
