Low complexity iterative decoding for PRML tape channels

A coding method with low complexity decoding is described. The method provi des good coding gain on partial response channels such as tape drive channe ls. The method is based on a product code combined with suitable reordering . Decoding employs soft decision detection on the partial response channel and iterative decoding of the product code. The code complexity is largely independent of the partial response characteristics.
