R. Madazli et al., The relationship of placental bed biopsy findings and fibronectin levels with the clinical severity of preeclampsia syndrome, FETUS AS A PATIENT, 2000, pp. 503-508
The aim of the study was to evaluate the relation between placental bed bio
psy findings and fibronectin levels with the clinical severity of preeclamp
sia syndrome. Thirty-five women with preeclampsia/eclampsia were compared w
ith 25 healthy women with uncomplicated pregnancies. Serum levels of fibron
ectin were measured by radial immundiffusion technic, Twenty-one placental
bed biopsies from preeclamptic pregnancies were compared with 17 from norma
l pregnancies. Placental bed biopsies were taken at caesarean section. In p
reeclampsia/eclampsia, fibronectin levels were higher than in normal pregna
ncy. Normotensive women all had normal placental bed biopsy findings and th
e incidence of pathological bed biopsy findings increased with the severity
of the preeclampsia. The plasma levels of fibronectin were significantly i
ncreased with the increments in diastolic blood pressure (r=0.49, p<0.001).
As a conclusion, the present study confirms a relation between the patholo
gical events in the placental bed and endothelial damage in preeclampsia.
