Employing official statistics from the year 1997 the present article analys
es inpatient treatment of children and adolescents with psychological disor
ders in all 16 German Bundeslaendler. Sixty per cent of the children and ad
olescents who are referred to and treated in a German clinic for psychologi
cal disorders on the basis of a psychiatric diagnosis are not given profess
ionally adequate treatment. Furthermore, evidence is presented documenting
inpatient treatment of children only 0 to 12 months of age in clinics throu
ghout Germany on the basis of psychiatric diagnoses. A new measure is intro
duced for future planning of inpatient health care for children and adolesc
ents with psychological disorders in Germany.
