This paper will define the signal processing technique known as matched-fie
ld processing and provide an overview of its recent applications to inverse
problems of underwater acoustics. These applications include: the localiza
tion of a source (the determination of source range, depth, and azimuth), t
omography for the estimation of deep ocean sound-speed profiles (or, equiva
lently, temperature) over large volumes of water, the estimation of shallow
water bottom properties (such as sediment thicknesses, sound speeds, densi
ties, and attenuations), the evaluation of numerical model performance: (re
lative to benchmark models), and the localization of array hydrophones (est
imation of array deformation).
