A made-matching method is first presented for solving a forward 3D problem
of the scattering of an acoustic wave from a body of revolution located on
the vertical axis of a cylindrical reference system within a horizontal sha
llow-water waveguide. Results provided by the above-mentioned method are th
en used to determine the sound field in such a waveguide and to study the i
nverse problem of determining the size, proportions and location of an embe
dded object. The difficulties that can be encountered when solving this inv
erse problem are analysed and a strategy is proposed for overcoming some of
them.
