V-51 NMR experiments have been performed to study the local magnetic and el
ectronic properties of the vanadium oxide bronzes beta -AV(6)O(15) (A = Na
and Ca). We observed a drastic change in the V-51 NMR spectrum due to a cha
rge-ordering transition in both oxides. The ground state of NaV6O15 is foun
d to be an antiferromagnetically ordered state, whereas that of CaV6O15 is
nonmagnetic. This is closely related with the number density of Vlf ions an
d the structure of the charge ordering, (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All
