Different dermatological problems in the horse may produce similar clinical
signs. The pathogens and pathogeneses of some dermatological diseases caus
ing problems during the diagnosis under practice situations will be discuss
ed.
First, a horse with round, greyish, asbestos-like lesions will be discussed
. Dermatophytosis, equine sarcoid and alopecia areata are in the differenti
al diagnosis. Second, the horse with scabs on the lower limbs is presented.
In this mulitfactorial problem, mange, bacterial dermatitis and immune-rel
ated problems may play a role. Third, the horse with painful crusts on the
back will be discussed. Here, dermatophilosis and staphylococcal dermatitis
are in the list of differentials.
